Craft projects for festive place settings
Photography Maree Homer
In our December issue we featured some gorgeous
festive table settings
. Because we know you're a creative bunch, we included some projects that you can make yourself, too. Here's how:
On the "Music makers" place setting page.
Festive plate
Clean plate with window cleaner, dry, then stamp words around edge. Alphabet stamp set, $34.95, LivedIn Coogee. StazOn ink pad in Jet Black, $8.95, Stampin' Stuff.
Scallop-edged placemat.
Place a plate face-down on giftwrap and trace around it. Put a Champagne glass at intervals along the line, tracing around the outer half to make semicircles. Carefully cut along the line with small, sharp scissors.
On the "Arty house" place setting page.
Watercolour placemat
Randomly paint different watercolours on an A3 sheet of paper from an artist's sketch pad and soften the edges with a corner lever - try a Three Petals corner lever punch, from Spotlight.
"Beachy vibe" place setting.
Birdseed favours
Pour 100ml boiling water into saucepan. Add 25g gelatin and stir. After two minutes, stir in 350g birdseed. We used small parrot birdseed mix. Half fill cookie cutters or silicon moulds with mix, pressing it into corners. Place knotted loop of bakers twine in mix, so it sticks out top. Add more birdseed mix. Use knife to smooth top. Allow to dry, remove from moulds. Dry completely.
"New romantic" place setting.
Spraypainted cutlery
Ensure cutlery is cleaned thoroughly and free from dust. Tape the head of the cutlery with painter's tape. Spray two thin coats of a good quality primer that will stick to the stainless steel - we used White Knight "Rust Guard" SLS Etch primer, from Bunnings. Allow two hours to dry and spray with enamel spray paint in your choice of colour. We used White Knight "Squirts" spraypaint in Gloss Black, from Bunnings. Handwash only. Discontinue use if paint starts to chip/scratch.
