Will you stick to your New Year's resolutions?

If you've made a New Year's wish-list, then it's time to turn your ambitions into actions!
You likely made some vague vows for 2012 - save more, spend less or finally get around to completing that DIY renovation...
According to new research out of the UK, the majority of us have pledged to keep some sort of resolution this year - with travel high on the to-do list along with vows to 'get a new job', 'get out of the rut' and 'read more books'! It will come as little surprise to the millions of Aussies who over-indulged during the festive season that the most popular New Year's resolution this year is to lose weight!
However, chances are - a few weeks into the New Year - you're falling behind. Here are my top tips to help you increase your resolution 'stickability':
Start at the end - imagine your bathroom renovated, rather than the back-breaking labour it may require to rip out your existing one. You're more likely to be successful if you set your desired goal and work backwards from there.
Set small goals - a holiday with the kids? Maybe a new car or kitchen?
Think long term - when will you plan for a family or retirement? Don't get bogged down in the everyday monotony of mortgages and bills - think big!
Work out how to pay for it - whether you're trying to clear debt or save for a goal, the sheer volume of financial products available can make a simple decision seem complicated. But there are some great online tools out there that will simplify the process - including the government's MoneySmart
budget planner
, or RateCity's
calculators
for savings accounts, home loans and car loans. You might be surprised to discover that switching your home loan to a cheaper option, for example, could save you hundreds of dollars each month. Saving the extra money could put you months or even years closer to achieving your other goals!
Then go for it!
