Be a good host
Lay down the rules (nicely):
To avoid awkward moments, be straight with your guests upfront - tell them if you don’t want them smoking on the property or if you’d prefer them to be shoeless in the house (but provide a pair of house slippers for them to use). There’s no use bottling up anger or frustration at their behaviour if you haven’t told them your likes and dislikes. But be sure to tell them the good things too, like helping yourself to the contents of the fridge!
Create a space for them:
Even if you don’t have a huge place, it’d be nice for everyone if guests had their own privacy. A room of their own is ideal, of course, but if it’s a shared space, don’t rush about in the morning, making them feel they also need to get up. Take the opportunity to enjoy a sleep in!
Get them up to speed:
If one side of the toilet doesn’t flush, let them know! Tell them how to work the alarm, where the tea and coffee (and kettle!) is, how the TV works and where they can find extra linen. It’s also wise to let them know your schedule if you have things planned like a work Christmas party, a tradesman popping by or playgroup for the kids so they’re in the know and can make their own arrangements if need be.
Make them feel special:
Get out the good linen, ensure it’s freshly washed and even spritz with a fabric fragrance for extra love! Ensure they have a lamp, fresh towels and soaps and maybe a few brochures or menus for places nearby they might want to visit. It also can’t hurt
Be a good guest
Bring a gift:
It doesn’t have to be expensive, but a small token of your appreciation can go along way! Make it as relevant as possible - a cookbook for the chef, a potted plant for the green thumb instead of flowers, a pretty tablecloth or coasters for the entertainer… you get the picture!
Respect your hosts:
This is their place, so respect their wishes. Always ask before you do - don’t just help yourself to their Wii games or jump in the pool, ask first. And always offer to help - with payment, with the dishes, with cooking etc.
Give each other breathing space:
Don’t rely on them to entertain you the entire time. Take a day here or there to do something yourself . Clean up after yourself: Keep your space tidy - make the bed, help with the washing up and keep your belongings in one place, not strewn throughout the house.
Send a thank you note:
It’ll ensure you’re welcomed back! And make the host feel extra special.
