Materials

  • Large tree branch
  • Handsaw
  • PVC pipe (65mm x 100mm)
  • Sand & Cement mix (20kg)
  • 2 buckets
  • WD-40
Make this unusual coatstand using a few bought and found items.

Step 1.

Find a good-sized branch and cut it back, leaving just interesting forked branches. Make sure it's well balanced.

Step 2.

Cut PVC pipe to fit the base section of brank trunk.

Step 3.

Mix enough cement (follow pack instructions) to fill about half of one of the buckets. The concrete should have a 'cake-mix' consistency.

Step 4.

Spray the inside of the second bucket with WD-40 to prevent the concrete from sticking. Hold pipe in the centre. Pour concrete around pipe (but not down centre of pipe) to about 15cm depth.

Step 5.

Leave concrete in a dry place and allow to set for 24 hours. Carefully rotate pipe every few hours during setting, for as many hours as you can, to prevent it from sticking to the pipe.

Step 6.

When set, remove pipe and turn bucket upside down to tip the cast concrete out. If the concrete is stuck, cut and split the bucket in two to allow the concrete to come away easily.

Step 7.

Place concrete base side up and insert PVC pipe and tree branch. Voila! A coatstand the exudes rustic chic.
