Materials

  • Wooden chairs
  • Sandpaper
  • Newspaper, cut into strips
  • Clear-drying adhesive
  • Clean dry cloth
  • Ice-cream stick
  • Scissors
  • Clear polyurerathane varnish such as Wattyl Estapol Satin
This traditional technique is an inexpensive way to revamp wooden furniture.

Step 1.

Clean chairs carefully and sand until smooth.

Step 2.

Apply a thin layer of adhesive to both sides of newspaper strips, using a glue that will dry clear. Press clippings flat onto the chair, beginning at the centre and working your way out, squeezing out any excess with cloth and ice-cream stick. Remove any wrinkles in the newspaper. Repeat this step all over the chair in any pattern.

Step 3.

Once the glue begins to set, repeat these steps with additional strips, layering them onto the chair until covered to your liking. Ensure strips underneath don’t slide.

Step 4.

Once glue begins to set, apply a coat of gloss enamel over the chair and allow to dry.
