2 x 30cm round paper lanterns in White, $7.50 each,

Tracing paper
Pencil & scissors
Assorted fabric, from $6.39 a m, Spotlight
Fabric shears
PVA glue & paintbrush, or spray-adhesive
Whether you want to pretty-up your bedroom, or you just want something more personalised for your lighting, these fabric-covered lanterns are a lovely idea.
Step 1
Assemble paper lantern according to pack instructions.
Step 2
Make a pattern template by tracing one of the almond-shaped sections of your lantern onto tracing or baking paper. Cut out template, leaving about 2cm around the area you’ve traced to allow for overlap. Place template against shade to ensure it fits.
Step 3
Hold template in place on fabric and with a pencil trace the shape. Cut out using fabric shears for a neat edge. Repeat until you have enough pieces of fabric to cover your lantern.
Step 4
Apply PVA glue (or spray-adhesive) to the back of each fabric strip and adhere to lantern, one at a time, each strip overlapping the next. Smooth down gently to prevent wrinkles.
Step 5
Fold excess fabric over the rim of the top and bottom of lantern and secure with glue. Leave to dry and then hang your customised creation. Play with grouping two or three lanterns together for added impact.
