If you'd like to create ambient lighting in your bedroom, try this typography night light project. It's a great idea for the hallway, too – just change the text to something more fitting, such as "welcome".
Step 1
Using a computer, type your chosen words and resize the type so the letters will print to about 15cm high. Choose an easy-to-read font (we used Helvetica bold). Print letters and cut out to create stencils.
Step 2
Use a ruler to find the centre point on your canvas and mark in pencil. Draw a horizontal line about 5cm above the point and 5cm below to create a guideline for positioning your letter stencils. Place stencils on the canvas and draw an outline around them in pencil. Carefully paint around the letters using black acrylic paint. Apply two coats.
Step 3
When dry, turn canvas over (print facing down) and attach your fluoro light to the back by screwing it to the top of the canvas frame, according to pack instructions. If you want to diffuse the light, attach a sheet of kitchen foil under the fluoro light (to the casing), and secure in place with masking tape.
Step 4
Attach fishing wire to the back of the canvas and hang your custom night light on the wall.
