Coffee and side tables aren't cheap. But sometimes all you need is a place to put your cup of tea and magazine. So here's how to create a table that not only looks good but won't cost you a fortune.

Step 1 Find a large wire shade and carefully remove fabric using a utility knife. Give the frame a light sand and wipe clean.

Step 2 In a well-ventilated area, spray-paint the frame in your chosen colour, ensuring you only apply light coats. Leave to dry.

Step 3 To create tabletop, place the narrow opening of your shade onto MDF sheet and draw around circumference in pencil. If you want the tabletop to have an overhang when fitted, draw your circle slightly bigger.

Step 4 Use a jigsaw to cut MDF sheet into tabletop shape. Or you could get the hardware store to cut the MDF for you. Sand edges of tabletop for a smooth finish.

Step 5 Paint MDF with undercoat; allow to dry. Finish with two coats of top coat. Let dry. Leave your tabletop plain, or you could get creative and paint a snazzy design.

Step 6 Secure tabletop on top of wire frame using super glue; press firmly to adhere. Voila! One cool, custom-made coffee table.
