To make our coatrack we used old timber fence palings found on the roadside. If you don't have any around the home, try your local tip, recycled timber yard or heritage building centre.

Using handsaw, cut 3 fence palings to desired size. Use offcuts for vertical supports — place them on the floor, then align 3 fence palings over the top. Hammer nails through palings and into vertical supports, ensuring nails don't go through to the other side.

Lay out doorknobs on fence palings and mark spots where you need to drill.

Drill holes through palings, place knobs through timber and secure on the back with washers and bolts. Trim knob screws with sharp pliers or angle grinder.

Attach picture-hanging brackets to back of rack and wall, and hang.
