Anti Skid Rug Spray, $27.95, Allaces.com.au
This is a quick and easy project that's affordable, too. Simply choose a fabric design you love and read on.
Step 1
Lay your hessian fabric on the floor and trim to desired size.
Step 2
(Optional step) Wash fabric on a delicate wash setting to help soften the hessian. Hang to dry in the shade immediately after spin cycle has finished to avoid creasing.
Step 3
Starting at one end of the fabric, remove threads (fray) one at a time to create a fringe. Repeat until the fringe is at a length you desire - about 10cm is a good guide. Make sure you allow an extra 1cm of fringe length for tying the knots.
Step 4
Separate small sections of the fringe (we used approximately 7 to 10 threads) and twist slightly. Tie in a knot and pull tightly. Repeat until the entire fringe is finished. When you get to the end, section the last few knots before you tie, to ensure it is evenly spaced.
Step 5
In a well-ventilated space, preferably outside, spray Anti Skid Rug spray on the back of your rug to prevent it from slipping when placed on the floor. Hold spray can about 30cm from the fabric and spray evenly. For large rugs, spraying the edges and a cross shape in the middle should suffice. Allow to dry before using.

Where can I buy hessian fabric??? I really like the pattern..... Have any idea where I can get something like that?
I washed the fabric, as suggested on a delicate cycle, and it frayed alot and ended up with many loose fibres. I was still able to make the rug, but maybe worth handwashing it first, or putting it on a 'handwash' washing machine cycle. Also, don't bother going to any hardware or flooring stores to look for the spray-on non skid stuff - almost no one sells it. Amazon does, but won't post to Oz. I didn't buy the stuff suggested, as I wanted this project to be cheap, so I just got some spray glue, and a cheap rubber non slip rug underlay from red dot, and glued that onto the back of the rug.
