Tools & Materials

  • Dulux Wash & Wear 101 Advanced or Dulux Design Collection
  • Quality masking tape: Scotch-Blue™ Painter's Tape for Multi-Surfaces from 3M
  • A paint stirrer and drop sheet
  • An effects roller or a brush may be used
  • 10mm medium nap roller, roller tray and a variety of paint brushes (including a 100mm or wider for the brush technique).

Method

Feature walls are a great way to update the look of a room quickly and cost effectively. After all, it's just paint and can be re-painted easily when you want another change.

As it will become the focus of the room, it's important to use a quality paint that will give you the best finish.

This video will demonstrate how to:

Mask off your designated feature wall

Before you begin painting, you’ll need to grab your masking tape and mask off anything that could get painted over on your chosen feature wall, such as windows, door frames and fittings. It’s important to use quality masking tape, as cheaper tape can allow paint to bleed, so you won’t get a true, sharp line.

Complete your undercoat

Begin painting with your brush at the edges and corners of the wall and around anything you’ve masked off. This process is called ‘cutting in’.

Paint the remainder of the wall with a roller. Make sure you get good coverage on the roller without drowning it in paint. Use a roller to roll the paint onto the surface in a series of close, zigzag strokes, one square metre at a time. Then, re-roll the area with parallel or up-and-down strokes to even up the spread of paint.

Finish second coat

Once the first coat is dry, apply the second coat in the same way.

And, of course, clean up

Cleaning up is easy with water for your brushes and roller.
