Tools & Materials

  • Selleys Sugar Soap
  • Cloth
  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Dulux UltraSmooth Prepcoat.
  • Quality masking tape: Scotch-Blue™ Painter’s Tape for Multi-Surfaces from 3M
  • A drop sheet
  • 80-100 grit sandpaper
  • A medium nap roller
  • A roller tray
  • A variety of brushes, one for cutting in and one 100mm or wider if you’re using the brush technique.

Method

Changing your feature wall is simple and effects paints can be painted over easily.

Dulux UltraSmooth Prepcoat helps you change a textured finish back to a smooth finish. It’s a premium, water-based sealer and undercoat with excellent opacity, sealing, filling and flow properties that has been specifically designed for use over textured products.

In this guide, we’re looking at painting over a wall that has previously been coated with an effects paint so you can refresh the look.

In preparation, mask the area and wash the walls with a Selleys Sugar Soap solution.

This video will show you how to lightly sand the wall surface to remove the majority of the effect, begin painting with a technique called ‘cutting in’, complete your prep coats and then apply two coats of your chosen paint, and how to clean up.

For more paint advice visit the Dulux website.
