Are there any rules about laying bathroom tiles? Would you use the floor tile or wall tile for the skirting in a guest toilet? And which would you use to tile around a built-in bath?

While the choice of tiles in general is a matter of individual taste, there are some guidelines when it comes to skirting. "It's appropriate to use a floor tile as the skirting," advises Marco De Clerico, Director of Skheme tile showroom in Rozelle, NSW. "But it should be no more than 150mm up the wall, so if your floor tile happens to be 600x600mm, it will need to be cut to between 100 and 150mm to be used as a skirting tile." Tiling around a built-in bath offers greater scope for creative flair. "You can use a floor or wall tile, or even use a different one, such as a mosaic, to create a feature," says De Clerico. Consider using mosaics in different colours for the wall and the bath surround to create a strong, contemporary effect. Skheme; (02) 8755 2300.
