Bedroom
If family, paperwork and clutter are encroaching, it's time to reclaim your bedroom, writes Sarah Laurie.
The practice of rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation has become a luxury these days. Here's how to restore the emphasis on this basic human need.
Single task
Perhaps ironing, watching television or catching up on paperwork have become a few of the many activities that occur in your bedroom. Banish household chores or leisure activities from the bedroom – the intention is to create a serene space. If a conversation begins to get heated in the bedroom, request that it continue in another room. By limiting what you do in your bedroom to sleeping and calm, enjoyable activities, it will become a peaceful space and you will experience it in a new way.
Calm the space
Everything that is functional should be out of sight, and all that is beautiful and indulgent should be at your fingertips. Return toys to the children's rooms. Stow out-of-season clothing in cupboards, use shelves for your favourite books and pretty storage boxes for personal essentials. Remember, even if your clothes are tucked into drawers, it's a false sense of order if they're all jumbled – try to sort them into neat piles.
Indulge
Beautiful sheets, gorgeous feather quilts and soft cashmere blankets are an investment in your happiness and wellbeing. To create a serene ambience, use large bedside lamps instead of a main ceiling light, display fresh flowers and burn scented candles. Just delicious!
Bliss tips
Sound
Soothing music and calm voices – the only sounds you should hear in your bedroom.
Taste
A delicious cup of tea in bed can be a lovely start to your day or a pleasurable way to wind down in the evening.
Sight
Clean linen in pretty colours will keep your bedroom looking fresh and feeling special.
Touch
A plush blanket placed at the foot of your bed feels divine and gives your room a luxurious look.
Smell
Drop a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow for a deep and restful sleep.
