Does your bedroom feel more stress zone than sanctuary? Calm it down by using these nifty storage techniques to put away your possessions.

Clothes cull

Pile all your clothes into one spot, set yourself 15 minutes to decide what to keep and cull and go for it. Be ruthless and donate the items that can't be repaired, don't fit, aren't flattering or you barely wear. Remember someone will get more use out of them and that the less in your wardrobe the more likely you will wear your favourite clothes because you'll be able to find them. Go on, we dare you!

Mad hatter

An old hat box can be used for a bedside table. It looks fab and can hold all sorts of things.

Hide and seek

If you're starting from scratch invest in clever dual-purpose furniture such as bed bases that feature drawers. They can hold linen, winter clothes, love letters or whatever takes your fancy. Tie sheet sets together with ribbon so you don't waste time looking for matching pillowcases.

Move up

Invest in built-in wardrobes that reach the ceiling and are custom made with the compartments you need. They hide a world of sin and save on room and mess. If your wardrobe doesn’t have built-in drawers, think about wire or wicker baskets so you can sort clothes and accessories– all the socks in one basket, all the t-shirts in another.

Pressed for space

Can't afford built-ins or are just renting? Do up an old wardrobe or linen press. Take out the shelves and add a rail to hang clothes on.

Stairway to heaven

Stack old suitcases on top of each other from largest to smallest for an interesting bedroom table. Items you don't want to get rid of but no longer use, like favourite childhood toys, can live in the bottom case and the top can house things you use all the time, such as lavender essential oil to help you drift off.
