Fed up with almost breaking a limb every time you enter your mini-me's bedroom? Avoid the damage, and nagging, with our expert advice and some handy storage tips for organising their areas.

Helping hands

Have your child clean up after themselves. Sounds impossible? Turn it into a game to see who can put away the most toys or give them an option like 'clean room and cake' or 'messy room and none'. Install tiny basketball hoops above the bin and laundry hamper to make flinging things in fun.

Play day

Drill in the importance of tidiness and organisation to give them more time. The less time they waste looking for their school supplies, the more they have to play.

Monkey see, monkey do

Label your little monkey's storage containers with words or pictures of what belongs inside and make their cupboards and drawers accessible to weeny hands and teeny heights.

Charitable cherubs

Set rules like 'one in, one out'. If a child brings home a new toy, an old one goes to charity. If that's too hard, do four culls a year - one at the start of each season. Be ruthless about what is used and what isn't. Most important, lead by example. If your child regularly see you donating, they're more likely to.

Box it

Give each kid a box that they can fill with their favourite mementoes, from art works to birthday cards. Have them choose the ones they love most and recycle the rest. At the end of each year transfer the contents to a memory chest that they can take with them when they leave home. Too easy!

New research shows young Australians are more worried about school and coping with stress than ever before. TODAY psychologist Jo Lamble had the details.
