Not much signals the start of the warmer weather than the fresh, fruity scents of citrus. So it’s no surprise that oranges are at their absolute best around this time of year. Loaded with vitamin C - in fact, just one orange will give you more than the recommended daily dosage of this essential vitamin - they’re also high in fibre, vitamin A and folate.
Selecting & storing
There are a few varieties - navel, seedless, blood - but whatever style takes your fancy, the best way to select is by touch. Firm and heavy is best as this means a lot of juice, while peel should be bruise-free and a nice colour. A tinge of green doesn’t affect the flavour and is something that can develop on the tree. Oranges are best stored at room temperature (so pop them in a nice bowl and they double as a room decoration!) and should be eaten with the week. Or, if refrigerated, you can get up to a month out of them.
Orang-inal ideas!
Cool treat
Perfect for hot summer days: freeze an orange, cut in half and attack with a spoon for a refreshing snack.
Fruitylicious
You can’t beat fresh orange juice Squeeze by hand, in a blender, a juicer - anyway you can - for a healthy start to your day.
Edible decor
Serve ice cream or sorbet at your next BBQ in orange shells. Simply slice the top of an orange, scoop out the flesh, fill with ice cream or orange sorbet and top with a blended mix of orange flesh and yoghurt or double cream. Yum!
