Sweet things come in small packages and blueberries are the perfect example of this! The small, marble-sized berries are perfect for all those yummy treats like cakes, muffins, tarts and jams. And while the sugar and flour in all those tasty treats might rob you of the blueberry’s nutritious vitamin C, there are other ways to enjoy them - in sauces, smoothies, salads or just by themselves. Fresh is best at this time, but out of season you can still enjoy them with one of the packs of frozen blueberries from your supermarket‘s frozen food section. Here’s what to look out for, what you get out of them and some simple ways to cook with them.
Buying & storing
Choose firm, plump blueberries with dark blue skin and avoid any that are soft or wrinkled. To s tore, remove from their punnet and place on a paper-towel-lined plate. Cover with plastic wrap and pop in the fridge where they should be fine for three to five days. If buying frozen berries remove 30 minutes from the freezer before you plan to use them as their flavour is at their best when at room temperature.
Enjoy them this way…
*
Whizz together some natural yoghurt, a little low-fat milk and a cupful or blueberries in a blender for a refreshing smoothie. A few strawberries added to the mix will enhance the flavour even more.
*
Sprinkle a few whole blueberries over a bowl of fresh muesli for an extra-tasty breakfast.
