Before: Characterless cottage

A Newcastle mum takes on a project to transform a rundown weatherboarder into a warm and welcoming holiday house. Photography Chris Warnes

The back of the original single-storey 1920s cottage was plain and stark with no character, says homeowner Katie Heath. "It was like a prison!" The only feature she wanted to retain here was the weatherboards.
