From cushions to couch covers, update your home in a flash with this season's textiles.
One of the simplest ways to freshen up your interiors is with textiles whether in the living room or the bedroom, changing cushions, linen, seat covers or even curtains is an easy (and inexpensive) way to update your look. Best of all, you can theme your textiles and rotate them regularly as the mood takes you.
Quick makeover
Adding or changing soft furnishings such as cushions will completely transform a room particularly if you have a neutral palette or unpatterned furniture to work with. But don't be dismayed if you have non-neutral furniture. You can still change your look easily; it's simply a case of finding cushions, throws, curtains and so on in one of the colours featured in the furniture. And there are no rules anymore when it comes to mixing prints and patterns. In fact, clashing prints and colours are all the rage so previous foes such as red and orange (or stripes and checks) now make the perfect companions!
Trend setter
This season is all about colour so don't be afraid to go crazy with the rainbow effect. Hot pinks, bright orange, banana yellow and grass green are all in. Florals and botanicals are also big right now, such as exotic jungle prints and riotous blooms. Geometrics are the new kid on the block and there are some fabulous, striking patterns such as zig zags that really stand out.
Signature style
Make a statement in your home with the textiles you choose and let the space reflect your personality. Decide on the hues you like then choose a selection of both plain and patterned textiles in that range. Are you zany and outgoing? Then go for a riotous mix of patterns and colours think geometrics, stripes and tribal prints. Or are you a bit of a romantic? Opt for a soft palette of gentle pastels such as cream, pink and blue and combine smart gingham with delicate rose prints in muted tones.
Colouring in
If you're nervous about adding colour or a new pattern, build the look slowly. Choose your theme (such as blue, or country) then start with just one with cushions and perhaps a throw. As you get used to it, add textiles to the space and experiment with different shades and prints. And don't be bogged down by just one scheme why not have different soft furnishings for different seasons? You can then rotate them every couple of months to get a whole new look.
Get crafty
If you fancy yourself as being handy with a sewing machine then try making your own pieces. Turn your favourite fabric into a series of cushions (go for different shapes and sizes), seat covers for dining chairs or even a wall hanging. And if you're feeling particularly creative, placemats and napkins in your favourite textile are a wonderful way to make your entertaining special.
Can't sew? Then call in the experts. If there's a fabric that you've fallen in love with, consider taking it to an upholsterer to re-cover your favourite armchair or ottoman to create a statement piece.
