This fact sheet will show you how to make a great little mosaic; perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor areas and of course stand-out pieces like a table top.
You can tile onto any hard, dry surface. Make sure it's clean and grease-free.
It's a good idea to draw your design in pencil first. That way you can stay within the lines. Then it's really as simple as a kids' colouring-in project.
Sort your tiles according to colour. You can then use your cutters to snip away and get pieces that fit exactly onto your drawn design.
For a really distinctive look you can hunt around for some old crockery and start smashing. These pieces will give any mosaic project a real lift.
First position your tiles on the board dry and step back to get an overview before fixing anything permanently.
Use a palette knife to apply an even coat of glue onto the board then set the tiles in place. Be sure to do small patches at a time so the glue doesn't set before you lay the tiles down.
Now, mix the grout as per the instructions on the back of the pack. Put on your latex gloves and apply the grout with your hands being careful to keep an eye out for any sharp edges. Wipe off any excess with a clean damp sponge making sure to rinse it thoroughly as you go.
Once dry, polish off the light grout film with a clean rag and there you have it - a beautiful and decorative mosaic.
It's that easy. DIY is meant to be fun, so if you need some help with a project at your place, drop into your local Mitre 10 and get one of mighty helpful staff to lend a hand.
