Scott Cam again brings his larrikin charm and professional credibility to hosting The Block 2011.
Over the past decade Scott has become one of Aussie TV's favourite faces, putting his stamp firmly on programs such as Backyard Blitz, Domestic Blitz, Random Acts of Kindness and Renovation Rescue. He is also a regular on radio and has written books on renovation and home maintenance.
Scott's a Bondi lad who, straight after completing a carpentry apprenticeship, got into an old four-wheel-drive and set off to explore Australia. In the ensuing five years he travelled the length and breadth of the continent doing all kinds of jobs, from mustering sheep and cattle to building ships.
During a visit home to Sydney that was intended to be a stopover before another trip he met Ann and everything changed. He stayed and three years later they were married. They now have three kids: Charlie, 14, and twins Sarah and Bill, 11.
Scott put down roots, establishing his own building business in 1990. He and Ann now enjoy the great Aussie lifestyle. They slip away to their farm in Mudgee, NSW, whenever Scott's busy schedule permits. "I like nothing better than throwing a fishing line in the water or relaxing around the barbie, searing a few steaks and enjoying a cold beer with friends," he says.
His loyal sidekick was his beloved kelpie cross Lizzie, who always appeared with him. She was almost as well-known as Scott. "I called her the site manager until she passed away in 2004." He now has a new dog, a red mixed cattle-dog named Rosie who is never far from his side.
Scott's a veteran of The Block and knows just how confronting the show can be for contestants. "I can't wait to see how they face up to the difficulties. This year's Block is perhaps the most daunting yet. I really want to see what all the couples can produce in the cauldron of this new challenge."
It's worth noting that Scott isn't just the host. He brings three decades of working experience to the role and will provide valuable advice for the participating couples.
