There's nothing better than eating fresh produce that you've grown yourself. Watch the video and follow the steps below to learn how you can build your own vegie garden like the Block contestants.
First, work out where would be best to build your garden. All vegies need sunshine to thrive and morning sun is ideal, so look for an easterly aspect. You'll also need to ensure that your plants are protected from the elements.
Avoid building your garden in an area where there are large trees they can steal moisture and nutrients from your plants. Close to the house is always handy, but if you have children or pets, you may need to consider fencing.
Top tip: to scare birds away, you can tie plastic bags to fences or stakes, or you could even string aluminium foil between the rows of plants.
Unpack your carton and lay out all the different pieces. Before you start to assemble your garden bed, remove the plastic film from the panels and check the instructions so you know where to start!
The PVC posts are for joining the panels together simply slide them onto the ends of the panels. Make sure each pressed lug in the steel panel slides freely inside the groove of the post. Continue to attach the panels in this way until they are all joined together.
You could choose to line your garden bed with weed matting, but the cardboard packaging will do the job just as well.
Fill your garden bed with a mixture of planting soil and compost, depending on the types of plants you're hoping to grow.
Most vegetables can be bought as seedlings, but you might also like to plant the seeds yourself. If you do choose this option, remember that soil preparation is very important.
Water your seeds or seedlings in well and remember to check your garden bed often to ensure that the soil remains moist. Regular applications of organic or artificial fertilisers will encourage growth.
