Dani and Dan couldn't be happier they used their '1 point' bonus trophy this week to secure a win.
"We had seen Neil and John's scores and we were tied with the boys. I didn't want to take any chances, so I was like, 'Let's just use it,'" says Dani, still elated that they took home the $5000 prize for their luxurious guest bedroom by just half a point.
Dan is also pleased: "We were rapt that we used our point at the right time and didn't throw it away," he admits.
The couple both say they were on tenterhooks going into this weekend's judging, with no idea which way the judges would swing. Their choice of paint weighed heavily on their minds.
"The whole week we based everything on the colour of our room," says Dan, admitting their strategy to use a dark, indigo blue was a bold one.
But they needn't have worried.
"The colour gives it a sense of richness," Neil says.
"It's very serene; it's 'cacooney'," Lisa adds, pointing out their choice of palate marries in well with current trends.
Neil was also a fan, saying he appreciated their high-end styling. The couple, who have started to develop a definite champagne taste, used expensive furnishings, predominantly from Melbourne store Fenton and Fenton, in their top-quality room. The result was one opulent, indulgent and very sophisticated guest bedroom.
"That is our strategy," Dani admits, saying spending more on their furnishings is what sets them apart from many of the other couples.
For the most part, their room came together well, although it was the usual mad-dash to the finish line.
"The night before reveal we had two pendent lights and two bedsides. At 7 o’clock we had to ring the plasterer and the electrician to come back out and change it," Dan says.
Their decision to have two beside tables was severely restricting access to their wardrobe space.
"Scotty came in and said, 'That's not going to work,' and then Dani saw it and went, 'Nooo!'"
But everything ended up coming up a treat and the couple couldn't be happier.
"I think this is actually our favourite room so far," Dani admits.
Their favourite thing: Their bed linen and cushions. "All the linen was from Fenton and Fenton — and the artwork was from there too," says Dani. "The judges said they wanted to jump into the bed," adds Dan.
Being bold: The couple knew they needed to go all out this week to impress the judges. Cue bright blue walls! "Scotty came in and worded us up. He said we had to do something different," says Dani.
Their biggest competitors: After this week, Dani and Dan think that Sophie and Dale could be their biggest threat in the competition. "I love their house and I think someone is going to pay a lot of money for it," Dani says.
