With last year's winners Polly and Waz returning to The Block this week, we catch up with the pair to chat about life after winning Australia's biggest renovating show, who they think have a chance to win this year, and the upcoming The Block LIVE Home and Lifestyle Improvement Expo.
"Life has not been the same since The Block and certainly in an incredibly good way," Polly says. "We were lucky to have an incredible one-off experience, and now, because if it, we've been able to pursue our dreams this year."
As the search begins for 2013's Block couples, Polly and Waz are quick to stress that the show gave them more than just life-changing opportunities — they've made life-long friends.
"We speak to Rod and Tania every other day," Waz says. "We've remained extremely close after the series. Rod and I have certainly hit it off, and Tania and Polly have as well. We went straight to Thailand with those guys at the end of last year."
While Monday night's challenge was the first time we've seen Polly and Waz this series, they've actually been more involved than you think — Waz actually worked on The Block site this year.
"I was down in Melbourne working for my old builder Shiran, who was doing some of the groundwork building before and while the couples were there," Waz says. "So I knew what they were up against and got to see the progression first-hand."
His stint working behind the scenes was cut short by a nasty hamstring injury (you may have noticed his walking on crutches on Monday night), and as it turns out, Rod is partially to blame.
"I've been a rugby boy all my life, but I'd always wanted to have a go at AFL, so Rod said, 'Come and have a game with me and my mates in reserve grade, and I'll come up to Sydney and have a game of Rugby Union with you over the winter,'" Waz says.
"So I've paid my dues and gotten my broken bones and injury, and now he's got to come up to Sydney and get bashed up."
Monday's Big Fat Block Wedding challenge pitted Polly and Waz against Josh and Jenna, and we have to know... Did it stir any old rivalries?
"Well, it was no secret that Josh and Jenna didn't really think too highly of us after the series had aired, but you know what? Sometimes, people don't get on with people and that's just life. There's no animosity and no anger," Waz says.
"We were there to do it for Sophie and Dale and for Brad and Lara," Polly adds. "I mean, $2,500 for each couple was the amount to win, it was completely about enabling them to win that money."
"And we didn't do a very good job, because we lost," Waz says with a laugh.
"It was bizarre, when we finished filming that day, we both got back home and kind of looked at each other and thought, 'That kind of felt normal. That was weirdly normal,'" Polly says.
Waz mucks around with the 2012 Blockheads.
Having spent some time with this year's couples, Polly and Waz think they know who's in with a shot come auction time.
"We're coming from a pretty spectacular place as far as an opinion goes, because the judges really didn't say too many nice things about our house," Waz says. "They said it was bland and it was boring, and that it didn't belong in Belle magazine, but, on the auction night, that's what proved to be the winner. As far as the houses go, I know Brad and Lara and Dale and Sophie, they haven't won a lot, but both of their houses seem to be very functional."
"We liked both of their houses because the roots are there and the base is there," Polly says. "We wanted to make a blank canvas with our house, which the judges didn't agree with."
"But I think the brothers' house is going to be a dark horse in the race," Waz adds. "We think they've actually done a very smart job of the way they've designed it."
"Really, it's anyone's game," Polly says.
"If the couples have real estate agents that will work their bums off for them, I reckon, that's what will make the difference," Waz says.
Next weekend, Polly and Waz will be appearing at The Block LIVE 2012, where they'll be signing autographs, meeting fans and participating in a very special challenge.
"We're having a Cook Off with Mark and Duncan from 2010," Polly says. "We're making Waz's famous burgers."
